I have been following the e-mail string prompted by the Guardian report on the funding difficulties facing universities in the UK. There is much bad news and more to come, but also some good news. The Times Higher this week had an intriguing one page preannouncement advertisement for a series of new academic positions that have been agreed by the VC at Birmingham (UK). Some of these posts are human geographers. The details are as follows:
1) Three posts will be advertised early this year in the broad field of urban geography and urban living. These posts are a Chair, Readership and Lectureship. The new Chair comes with three attached lectureships. There will also be some pilot research funding provided.
2) A senior lectureship will also be advertised this year that is linked to this initiative, but will be based in the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies.
3) Two lectureships to be advertised in 2011.
This could be the first time in British human geography that a new Chair has been created that comes with three attached lectureships. This is an unusual opportunity for someone to form a significant new research group.
Best wishes,
John
