*********************************
Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was an extraordinary man who was a pioneering supporter of many progressive causes that we take for granted today. He was a socialist, poet, philosopher, vegetarian, mystic, supporter of women's rights and advocate of living closely with nature and the land. He bravely lived an openly gay life at a time when homosexuality was outlawed. If you want to know more come to Tameside History Club's next event when Sheila Rowbotham of Manchester University will talk about her new book Edward Carpenter ; a life of liberty and love.
The event takes place at Tameside Local Studies and Archives Centre on
