EFDSS Archivist (3 days per week)
£24,000 pro rata
The English Folk Dance and Song Society seeks to appoint a qualified archivist
with a minimum of five years' experience to work with the Library Director and
team in developing its internationally renowned multi-media archive collections
focusing on the folk arts in England and beyond.
The Archivist will be responsible for archiving and managing the collections held
at EFDSS, undertaking cataloguing and preservation duties and providing
support to internal staff, researchers and Society members.
Key Tasks:
To be responsible for the cataloguing and preservation of archival collections
to professional and international standards.
Assist with developing web based catalogues and assisting with the
development of exhibitions of archival material.
Conduct conservation assessment, prioritising conservation requirements and
allocating the conservation budget.
Work to improve access to the archive materials held and in raising
awareness of the archives both within the Society and externally.
Work with the Library Director on the Librarys strategic plan and prepare and
maintain library policies and procedures.
Monitor and advise on issues concerning the archive facilities, e.g. storage,
security, environmental conditions and pest control.
Contribute to the management of the Societys other special collections e.g.
audio/visual collection and museum objects.
Liaise with external depositors regarding transfer of special collections.
Provide a wide-ranging enquiry service to the membership, EFDSS staff and
general public.
Pursue personal and professional development and maintain professional
contacts.
This job description is designed to reflect the duties currently incorporated in
this post. The Library Director and Chief Executive may amend these in light of
changes in the Library.
PERSONAL SPECIFICATION
Essential
Educated to degree level.
Professional qualification in archive administration, records management or
equivalent.
At least 2 years experience working in an archive environment covering a
wide range of media.
Sound knowledge of current professional standards and best practice
including archive descriptive standards e.g. ISAD(G) and EAD and archive
management standards BS 5454 and TNA Standard for Record Repositories.
Practical experience of archival software (CALM) and strong IT skills.
Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 40lbs.
Desirable
Membership in a recognised professional body.
Previous experience with archive digitisation projects.
Qualities
Enthusiastic, self motivated with an adaptable approach to work.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills, must be outgoing and friendly personality as this
will be in part a customer facing position Must be well organised and able to
work unsupervised to complete tasks and objectives.
Must be able to work as part of a team, assisting with tasks and helping
others as necessary.
