Dear all!
May I remind you of our upcoming meeting of the RSS Highlands Local Group
next Wednesday (details see below). The meeting will be followed by the
group's annual general meeting, to which everybody is invited. During the
AGM there will be the chance for you to suggest potential speakers for this
years seminar round.
Best Wishes
Claus (RSS HLG secretary)

TIME: 3pm
VENUE: Room 3.052 of the Polwarth Building (*), Forester Hill Campus,
University of Aberdeen
TITELE: Analysing metabolomics' data: A challenging task
SPEAKER Marianne Defernez (Institute of Food Research, Norwich Research
Park, Colney Lane, Norwich NR4 7UA, UK)
ABSTRACT
Metabolomics is truly multi-disciplinary: It requires a multitude
of skills for the research to be successful, ranging from
spectroscopic and statistical expertise to in-depth knowledge of
the biological systems under study. In this talk I will focus on
the data analysis and show why and how some of the statistical
methods used have evolved since the term 'metabolomics' was first
coined twelve years ago. This will provide an opportunity to
highlight current trends and limitations. It will also demonstrate
that the data analysis should not be seen simply as the concluding
part of an investigation; it is in fact greatly influenced by
upstream steps. In particular the data pre-treatment necessarily
to make the raw data suitable for the statistical analysis itself
has a huge impact on the outcome, and I will discuss this issue
for both NMR, and LC and GC-MS data. The talk will show the benefit
of having a better appreciation of the overall procedure required
for investigations in this field.

the Polwarth Building above main entrance door. A lift is
available. No swipe cards will be needed to access this
building in the afternoon.
A map is available, http://www.abdn.ac.uk/maps/foresterhill.php ,
and the "hybrid" option does show the shape and colour of the
buildings for those unfamiliar with the site.
