Previously I think I had to send you/JACH sysadmin an ssh key to get the git:// working - did this get wiped out with the server problems ? Alternatively, if I go through and replace all the git:// with http:// in .git/config, will it then work ?

The git: and http: protocols are read-only so you can pull but not push. Tweaking the URLs should allow you to resync until we get git: working again.
The ssh key was so that you can push using the git user and ssh as detailed in http://starlink.jach.hawaii.edu/starlink/GitPrimer - that should work fine.
