Vacancy for a fully funded PhD and a research-assistant in the project “EMF Health Risk Perception. The Effect of Risk Communication in its Political Context".
The Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research studies the functioning of contemporary societies from a historical, comparative and empirical perspectives. The AISSR offers training to PhD researchers and houses top-quality research following a clear scientific mission and high-level research programmes. The AISSR is a research institute within the UvA-FMG and hosts researchers of three departments: Political science, Sociology/Anthropology, and Geography/Planning/Development Studies.
The Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research invites applications for a fully funded PhD position and a research-assistant. Both positions are part of the ZonMw financed research on health risks of electromagnetic fields. The sociology of risk and health is central to this research. Particularly, we focus on the mechanisms through which policy discourses affect risk perception of electromagnetic fields. The research will be conducted in two countries, including the Netherlands, using longitudinal quantitative and ethnographic methods. The PhD will spent at least one year abroad. The research is meant to contribute to the sociology of risk and to health risk communication policy. Candidates will work in a small team.
We are looking for a PhD candidate who has completed a Master’s degree in one of the social sciences, preferable sociology. Knowledge of Dutch and another modern language is required so that ethnographic fieldwork can be started within one year. For the position of research-assistant we are looking for candidates who are either almost or already graduated in one of the social sciences, preferably in sociology as well. The PhD-candidate position will be for 5 years part-time (80%), the position of assistant will be for 2 years part-time (40%). Both the PhD-candidate and the research-assistant will form part of the AISSR programme-group “Culture and Citizenship”, in which sociologists and migration-specialists work together. The project-coordinator is Dr. Christian Bröer in close cooperation with Dr. F. Woudenberg of the GGD Amsterdam, one of the applicants of the project. Prof. dr. Jan Willem Duyvendak leads the project.
Tasks – PhD-candidate:
- Carrying out the research project EMF Health Risk Perception. The Effect of Risk Communication in its Political Context'
- Following PhD-educational trajectories (courses, staff-seminars, PhD-clubs)
- Writing and defending a dissertation
- Participating in a project group
- Publishing results in international peer-reviewed journals
- Helping to organize (international) workshops.
- Teaching for at least 10% of the time
Tasks – Research assistant:
- Gathering and administrating quantitative and qualitative data
- Transcribing interviews
- Administration and organization of the project
- Supporting the project-team.
Profile - PhD Candidate:
- Graduated in one of the social sciences, preferable sociology
- Extensive and demonstrable experience with quantitative and qualitative methods in the social sciences
- Familiarity with research in health-risks
- Sufficient knowledge of Dutch and another modern language so that ethnographic fieldwork can be started within one year
Profile – Research-assistant:
- (Almost) graduated in one of the social sciences, preferable sociology
- Experience with quantitative and qualitative methods in the social sciences
- Experience in organizing projects

The PhD candidate will be be appointment from Juni 2010 for five years. Evaluations will be held after 8, 19 and 31 months. The salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from € 2.042,- gross per month based on a fulltime contract in the first year, increasing to € 2.612 gross per month in the final year.
The student assistant will be appointed for 2 years, 0,4 fte . The salary can range from € 1801,- gross per month based on a fulltime contract to € 2.099 depending on the year of study.
