*AHRC-funded studentships at Royal Holloway, University of London:
History and Historical Geography of British imperialism and colonialism*
The following funded PhD opportunities are available at Royal Holloway,
University of London, this year (commencing September 2010). We are
particularly keen to attract applicants who want to work on the *history
of British imperialism ad colonialism, from interdisciplinary,
comparative and/or postcolonial perspectives*.
Royal Holloway has an **AHRC Block Grant** award of 4 studentships in
the areas of History and Historical/Cultural Geography. These pay full
fees and maintenance for three years leading to a PhD. The Departments
of Geography and History are world renowned centres of research, with
large and lively communities of postgraduates. Students have access to
some of the richest facilities for historical research anywhere in the
world: in addition to the College’s substantial library collections,
there are the National Archives, British Library, libraries of the
University of London and the Institute of Historical Research. Royal
Holloway also has an active interdisciplinary Postcolonial Research
Group, which hosts researchers from across the world.
The AHRC research council studentships have the standard UK/EU
qualification criteria. Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and
College studentships, as well as only fees-only awards, for PhD research
are also available.
Details of the awards are available from:

The closing date for applications for funding is 8th March 2010 – but
interested candidates should get in touch well before that date with Dr
Zoë Laidlaw ([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and
Dr David Lambert ([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>) to
discuss potential projects and maximize their chances. The fields for
the AHRC awards were very competitive last year.
