Transport Geography Research Group Call for Papers: 'Transport and climate change' session the RGS-IBG Annual Conference 2010, 1-3 September 2010, London.

 

Conveners: Lee Chapman (University of Birmingham) and Tim Ryley (Loughborough University)

 

Transport accounts for 26% of global CO2 emissions and is one of the few industrial sectors where emissions are still growing.  All modes of transport, except for walking, cycling and electrified railways powered from renewable sources, are powered by fossil fuels.  As the days of 'cheap oil' are over, a major challenge for transport and society over the next 20 years or so is to develop viable alternatives to oil-based fuels.  However, transport has received little attention for climate change research and was largely overlooked in the Stern Review.  Research into climate change and transport has largely focused on mitigation by reducing greenhouse gas emissions via behavioural and technological change.  However, there is also a need to consider adaptation so that society is resilient to the future impacts of climate change on our networks.  In effect, both adaptation and resilience are linked and a holistic framework for research and investment is required to improve the relationship between transport and climate change.

 

This is a call for papers on any aspect of climate change and transport, covering human and physical geographies.  Papers are welcome from all interested parties working in transport-related applications of climate change mitigation and adaptation.  Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, papers which span traditional academic disciplines with a geographical dimension are particularly encouraged.  It is expected that papers in this session will cover a range of spatial scales and transport modes.  

 

Titles and abstracts (200 words) should be emailed to Lee Chapman ([log in to unmask]) and Tim Ryley ([log in to unmask]) by Friday 5th February 2010. We would welcome initial expressions of interest and ideas.

 

Postgraduate Prize: the Transport Geography Research Group has an annual prize (a certificate and a small cash prize) for the best postgraduate presentation in any of the TGRG sessions at the RGS-IBG 2010 Conference.
