*UK Transport Research Centre
Centre Co-Coordinator and Assistant to the Director*
*Duties and Responsibilities*
The postholder will provide major support to the Director across the
range of his developmental, co-ordinating and promotional
responsibilities; he/she will assist him in researching current issues
and preparing presentations, will play a pivotal role in the development
and running of UKTRC, and provide a primary point of contact with
interested parties in other universities, the transport profession,
pressure groups, the public, and the media. He/she will also run the
Director's office and ensure the day-to-day co-ordination of UKTRC
activities across the various partner universities, working with the
UKTRC Co-Directors and others.
The postholder will also work closely with a part-time UKTRC
Communications Manager, and will be assisted in his/her duties by a
part-time secretarial post, both to be appointed and to be housed with
the postholder in the Director's offices at UCL.
The post is initially funded for 4 years and 6 months. The expected
start date is 1 April 2010
*Key Requirements*
The postholder will work closely with the Director, contributing ideas
and advice, at times dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
He/she will be required to keep the Director updated on progress across
the full range of UKTRC activities, and any external national and
international developments relevant to the work of UKTRC. He/she must be
well organised, flexible, articulate, enthusiastic, knowledgeable about
transport research, policy and practice, and be able to produce briefing
notes and other documents in a clear writing style. He/she should
complement the knowledge and skills of the Director, and be able to take
tactical decisions and be able to work on his/her own initiative.
Since this is a new kind of research centre, which is strongly policy
and practice oriented, working practices will need to be established and
adapted in the light of experience. He/she will be the everyday outward
face of UKTRC, and so needs to have demonstrable skills in working well
with a wide range of organisations and individuals, including academics,
practitioners and the media. A background in the social sciences and
existing knowledge of the transport sector in the UK is essential.
