6th European Association for South East Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) Conference, University

2nd Call for papers: Tourism in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region
The countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-Region have experienced extraordinary growth
in international tourism with the contribution of tourism to the GMS economy significantly
increasing in recent decades. Covering the countries of Cambodia, the People's Republic
of China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, this panel
seeks to uncover ‘host’ experiences of, and responses to, tourism-generated
opportunities, challenges and changes. These experiences and responses include those of,
inter alia, individuals, families/households, communities and governments seeking their
own or collaborative aims, agendas and priorities. Theoretical and empirical papers are
encouraged from across the GMS so as to reflect the divergence/commonality of
experiences and responses to the growth of international and domestic tourism. Papers
which address related methodological issues are also welcomed. Possible themes include,
but are not restricted to, policy, pro-poor initiatives, intra-regional collaborations,
employment, environment, identity, rural/urban, gender, class and ethnic difference.
Authors are invited to submit a title and brief abstract (not more than 250 words) to the
session convenor Katherine Brickell ([log in to unmask]) by February 26th
2010 at the latest. The panel has reached its requisite number of papers but welcomes
additional papers to the panel.
