In the daze prior to Mac and MS desktop publishing was done using a text
editor with mark-up commands spooled to a computer typesetter. The copy
was sent using unix commands to a dot matrix printer on which the first
proof reading was done. Proof reading required being able to understand
the markup in the text file. MS is only at best a footnote in computer
history.
As for my CEO boss, he at least understood what an angry faggot was
capable of. He hired me when I was working as an openly gay steelworker
based on photos I had taken with my Mamiya C330f TLR of a mass strike
meeting. I was elected as an union delegate in the steelworks after it
became known that I was one of the leaders of the 1978 gay and lesbian
rights riots in Sydney in 1978.
I don't think my CEO knew that I was forced to leave Sydney College of
the Arts after being told that as openly gay and a supporter of gay
liberation I had no place in the college or any future as an artist.
(This was Australia's leading art school, I would add.)
For this support of me as an artist and photographer I owe him a lot. He
died before I had time to thank him, otherwise I would have attended his
very large funeral. He was a brave and great man.
But perhaps this is an era past... imagine telling a 20 year old
student, one of the more talented and promising students, that he has no
future in this college or as an artist because he is gay. This is one of
the reasons why I feel I simply cannot teach. It would be too painful.
