0F ANTHONY CARO
Sculptural essence without making an abuse (of architecture):
towers right on the edge of going too far.
Wood forces things on you.
Steel would be very different.
Wood speaks to you:
preserve the ancient thing & have a conversation with it.
Is sculpture your religion?
It isn’t so wrong. It isn’t so wrong.

With only slight editing, I was able to use each of the 8 lines I wrote down while watching
Alain Fleischer's documentary on this major British sculptor. Because he was championed
by Clement Greenberg during the same period CG was making the reputation of
Washington Color School painters, I can remember seeing a fair amount of Caro's work in
exhibitions and collections within the Washington DC area but wondering whether there
was a shared aesthetic. A recent museum exhibition demonstrated that Anne Truitt's
sculpture in its elevation of color as subject participated much more closely in the
painters' aesthetics.
