Ha! Bloody Maoist linguists! I'd forgotten the Australian Connection with
Halliday, Chris. Is he big there? My impression was that he'd been
virtually forgotten after the sixties other than by linguistic dinosaurs
like me. I have to say, having rediscovered him, that I find his later work
much much more comprehensible (and much more interesting) than "Categories
of a Theory of Grammar".
But a social semiotician? Is that how you'd characterise him? I'm not sure
where I'd place him myself, but I'm not sure it would be there.
