SPECIAL SESSIONS
For the 65th Symposium, Michael Duncan, University of Georgia, is
organizing a mini-symposium entitled, “Metal Containing Molecules”.
Metal-containing molecules probe the fundamentals of metal bonding,
metal-adsorbate interactions, metal-ligand bonding and metal ion
solvation. The spectroscopy of these systems is therefore relevant for
many areas of chemistry, biochemistry, catalysis, materials and
astrophysics. This symposium brings together spectroscopy of all types
that focus on metal- and metal-ion-containing molecules, metal atom
clusters, and metal-molecular clusters. Invited speakers will include
Michael Heaven, Emory University; Lucy Ziurys, University of Arizona;
Andre Fielicke, Fritz Haber Institute, Berlin; and Michael Duncan,
University of Georgia. A second mini-symposium is being organized by Ben
McCall, University of Illinois, Urbana and Jun Ye, JILA/University of
Colorado on the subject of “High Precision Spectroscopy and Frequency
Combs.” This mini-symposium will cover new approaches to molecular
spectroscopy enabled by frequency combs. Invited talks for this
mini-symposium will be given by Ronald Holzwarth, MPI-Garching; and
Ronald Walsworth, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. A third
mini-symposium is being organized by Fleming Crim, University of
Wisconsin and Thomas Rizzo, EPFL, entitled “Spectroscopy and Dynamics of
Bio-molecules and Ions.” This mini-symposium will explore recent
progress in obtaining and interpreting highly-resolved vibrational
spectra of biomolecules and cluster ions. Invited speakers include Mark
Johnson, Yale University; Tom Rizzo, EPFL; and Tim Zwier, Purdue
University. A session on theory is being organized by Anne McCoy, John
Herbert, and Russell Pitzer, Ohio State University, featuring an invited
talk by Tucker Carrington, Queens University.
ELECTRONIC ACCESS
Minor refinements of the web-based submission process for abstracts have
been made. The parallel design of this user-friendly interface and the
web-based upload of powerpoint presentations is continued. The format
for the abstracts remains the same. Updated information on abstract
submission will be available early in 2010 and the abstract upload site
will open for submission about February 1, with the upload site for
powerpoint presentations opening about June 1.
PRE-REGISTRATION AND ACCOMMODATIONS
A form for registration and dormitory reservation is located inside this
flyer. Similar forms can be downloaded from the Symposium website.
Capability for online credit card payment of registration and dormitory
reservations is continued. Online registration is encouraged and will
begin April 1. Please visit the Symposium website for updates and links.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
The abstract book will be printed directly from a computer file this
year. All abstracts whether submitted electronically or on paper should
have the style indicated below for uniform appearance in the abstract
book. This appearance will be automatically created for abstracts
submitted electronically but of course must be created by the author for
paper abstracts. Abstracts on paper will be scanned and reproduced at
approximately a 1:1 scale.
The formatting details for contributed papers can be found in the paper
version of this announcement which should be received by persons on the
symposium mailing list in January 2010 or are viewable at our Web site.
Briefly, paper abstracts will be scanned and must be smaller than 6.75
inches (17.1cm) wide and 4.25 inches (10.8cm) long. Note at the bottom
paper category (see below) and time (5, 10, 15 min) requested for
presentation.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE
1. If submitting by the traditional paper method, please send a total of
two copies of each abstract, at least one of high quality for electronic
reproduction.
2. Underline the name of the person presenting the paper.
3. Remember to indicate in the comment line if the speaker is to be
considered for the Rao Prize (see below for complete instructions).
4. DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ALL ABSTRACTS IS MARCH 1, 2010.
5. For the time of your presentation, check the program, available by
April 15 on our web site.

ON-LINE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
When you have completed your abstract, go to the website for uploading,
http://molspect.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/symposium/
and click on the link “Abstract Submission Instructions and Gateway”.
Upon uploading, your document will be processed by a LaTeX-2e compiler
and you will automatically receive feedback indicating either a
successful submission or a problem. If you upload successfully, you need
do nothing more, except print out the web page giving your USERNAME and
PASSWORD. These will be used when you upload your powerpoint talk or
with any other communication involving your abstract. Once you have
successfully uploaded your abstract, DO NOT resubmit a "revised" copy.
DO NOT send us an additional paper copy. Either action could result in
your abstract being included twice in the program. Please note that we
can only handle one format for electronic submission. LaTeX was chosen
because of its support by several American professional societies and
widespread use in the worldwide scientific community.
SPONSORSHIP We are pleased to announce our anticipated sponsorship for
the 65th Symposium. Principal funding will come from the Army Office of
Research (ARO). We are most grateful to ARO for their continued support.
We anticipate corporate and individual sponsorships as in the past.
Among other things this support allows us to reduce the cost of the
picnic for students and subsidizes the coffee and doughnuts. We are
pleased that the Coblentz Society will sponsor the reception before the
picnic. There will be the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy Review
Lecture in one of the mini-symposia. Our sponsors will have exhibits at
the Symposium and we encourage you to visit their displays.
RAO PRIZE This year three Rao Prizes for the most outstanding student
talks at the 2009 meeting will be presented. The winners are Amanda
Case, University of Wisconsin; Andreas Hauser, Graz University of
Technology; George Barratt Park, MIT. The Rao Prize was created by a
group of spectroscopists who, as graduate students, benefitted from the
emphasis on graduate student participation, which has been a unique
characteristic of the Symposium. This coming June three more Rao Prizes
will be awarded. In order to be eligible for the Rao Prize, a student
must (i) be primary author of the work being presented; (ii) be the
actual presenter of the talk; (iii) never have competed for the Rao
Prize prior to this year; and (iv) not have completed a Ph.D. thesis
prior to March 1, 2010.
If a student wishes to compete for the Rao Prize, he or she should i)
indicate this in the comment area of the abstract (due by March 1) for
the talk they wish to be judged and ii) see that a letter or email be
sent from the research supervisor certifying that the student meets all
four of the above requirements.
This certification letter may be a simple email message addressed to
Terry A. Miller ([log in to unmask]). The letter
should identify the talk abstract by its acceptance number (when
available) which is furnished at the time of abstract submittal. The
letter of certification is not a nomination letter and will not be
considered by the prize judges. Rao Prize winners and their co-authors
are invited to submit to the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy articles
that are based on the research described in their talks. After passing
the normal review process, each article will appear in the Journal with
a caption identifying the paper with the talk that won the Rao Prize.
The award will be administered by a Prize Committee chaired by Yunjie
Xu, University of Alberta, and comprised of Kevin Lehmann, University of
Virginia, John Muenter, University of Rochester, Brooks Pate, University
of Virginia, Douglas Petkie, Wright State University, and Tim Zwier,
Purdue University. Any questions or suggestions about the Prize should
be addressed to the Committee. Anyone (especially post-docs) willing to
serve on a panel of judges should contact Yunjie Xu
([log in to unmask]).
PICNIC The Symposium picnic will be held on Wednesday evening of the
conference. The cost of the picnic is included in your registration (at
below cost to students), so that all may attend the event. The Coblentz
Society is the host for refreshments before the picnic starting at 7:30pm.
LIABILITY The Symposium fees DO NOT include provisions for the insurance
of participants against personal injuries, sickness, theft or property
damage. Participants and companions are advised to take whatever
insurance they consider necessary. Neither the Symposium executive
committee, its sponsors, nor individual committee members assume any
responsibility for loss, injury, sickness, or damages to persons or
belongings, however caused.
HELP US KEEP THE MAILING LIST CURRENT. If your address has changed,
please let us know so that you can continue to receive Symposium
notices. Please send us an email ([log in to unmask]). Persons
interested in the Symposium, but not presently on the mailing list, are
also welcome to send an email with their address information.
