Sorry, change http://dissertation.sanm.hull.ac.uk/ to http://dissertations.sanm.hull.ac.uk/ and all should be well.
Oops... :)

Hi there folks.
A couple of us have been tenatively dipping toes into the water:
I've rejigged an existing project to provide a mobile version:
http://dissertation.sanm.hull.ac.uk/
Desktop PC's will get a redirect to http://dissertation.sanm.hull.ac.uk/full/
while mobile devices get sent to http://dissertation.sanm.hull.ac.uk/mobile/
It's a fairly basic app and doesn't use any of the flashy mobile features like positioning etc. Even the layout styling is stolen from Apple's own dev styles but it was only a day or so's work plus some stylistic tweaking.
At a campus level (we're at Hull's Scarborough campus), James Proctor, our campus web developer has thrown up a quick mobile version of the onsite Pocket Campus service (http://m.pocketcampus.scar.hull.ac.uk/). It's still fairly basic but isn't a bad starting point, as well as being fairly easy to add to over time. Being a small campus means that some of the wider area serices are less needed here.
Liking m.ox.ac.uk, incidentally.

Hi everyone
We at Heriot-Watt are wildly behind the times and have nothing centrally in terms of mobile development. We are currently developing a redesign of the site and plan to incorporate a mobile style but have little knowledge in the sense of building applications.
Would be interesting to know how many universities went down the iPhone app route or equivalent, or run dedicated mobile sites with different/scaled down content?

Hi all,
I was the lead developer on a JISC-funded rapid innovation project called Mobile Campus Assistant. MCA recently finished and we are looking at strategies to continue developing the outputs of the project.
We wanted to make time and location sensitive information available to students via their mobile phones. For example, where is the nearest available PC? Where is the nearest wireless hotspot? Which library is now open?
We created a RESTful web application that produces HTML for mobile browsers, but also provides RDF and json that could be used by developers to create native applications based around data we are exposing. As part of the project we also created a demonstrator native Android application and I need to finish off a native iPhone application.
The project blog reports issues we found and has nuggets of other information: <http://mobilecampus.ilrt.bris.ac.uk/>. You can also see the web application: <http://mca.ilrt.bris.ac.uk/>. The source code is available on GitHub <http://github.com/MikeJ1971/mobile-campus-assistant>.
Cheers
Mike
