Doctoral studentship as part of an NIHR programme based in the Division
of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Oxford.
Start date October 2010
A National Institute for Health Research programme entitled ‘
Examining the role of patients’ experiences as a resource for choice
and decision-making in health care’ has been awarded to a
multi-disciplinary team led by Sue Ziebland and Ann McPherson in the
Health Experiences Research Group, Department of Primary Health Care,
University of Oxford. The programme will run for 5 years from February
2010.
As part of this exciting new programme we are seeking a doctoral
student to help develop and pilot test (in experiments and primary care
trials) a new, generic measure/ questionnaire to capture the health
effects of exposure to online health information on patients’
experiences (PEx).
Trials to evaluate the impact of online PEx need to identify the most
appropriate outcomes. The range of relevant outcomes is potentially
large and may be addressed, in part, by some existing measures - eg
health status and health-related quality of life, emotional adjustment,
coping and decisional conflict. However, because research on online PEx
information is in its infancy, no assessment tool exists that can
identify the unique components that are likely to be affected. It is
unlikely that a single measure could capture the full gamut of health
effects associated with exposure to online PEx across all clinical
areas.
The proposed doctoral work will provide an opportunity to combine
qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis to
develop and test the new assessment tool. The inclusion of the work in
the NIHR programme will enable the performance of the measure to be
assessed in a series of experiments and primary care trials.
The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Crispin
Jenkinson and Sue Ziebland.
Studentships will be for a fixed term of 3 years and will cover all
fees plus an annual stipend (for 2010 this will be £15,170).
Further particulars and details of how to apply can be obtained from
our website www.dphpc.ox.ac.uk or by emailing: [log in to unmask]
Closing date for applications is 11 February 2010 and interviews will
be held on 17 February 2010.
