Hi All
Over the last few weeks we have made a few improvements to Parashoot, the online risk assesment tool developed by the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice to support FE/HE media departments and media companies.
Parashoot improves the quality of risk assessments and makes the process more efficient. Many FE/HE media departments don't have a risk assessment solution and contravene guidance set out by the Health and Safety Executive. Those that do often operate a painful paper based process.

Thanks

Subject: Parashoot: Risk Assessment for Student Productions
Just before the Summer I sent a message to the list alerting people to a new online Risk Assessment tool developed by the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice. The response was very positive and the service is now being used in over a dozen University media departments.
ITV have also adopted Parashoot as their Risk Assessment solution using it to support in house productions which include Coronation Street, Regional News etc
Ruth Denyer, Head of Health and Safety Risk Management at ITV said: "Parashoot provides an innovative solution to risk assessment that really suits the production business. The main benefit for us is that it provides sensible and appropriate advice and guidance which can be accessed throughout the risk assessment process which helps productions manage the paperwork involved in risk assessment. It provides a directory of useful safety information and ensures appropriate authorisation."
If you would like to trial Parashoot within your own organisation please visit http://www.parashoot.co.uk.

Many if not most Higher Education Media departments now have an element of practical work in their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. For example, at Bournemouth University over 3000 individual student productions take place each year and for each of these productions Bournemouth is responsible for making sure a Risk Assessment has taken place.
Most institutions operate a paper based system if they operate a system at all! However, the quality of the forms produced by students can be poor as students often don’t know the hazards they might encounter or how to mitigate against them through control measures, the tutor ‘sign off’ process is often inefficient and most importantly student learning isn’t often part of the process – just a bureaucratic
paper exercise.
It is for this reason that The Centre for Excellence in Media Practice has developed Parashoot, an online risk assessment system. Parashoot is now being used by a number of higher and further education media departments and one or two major independent production companies and one of the major UK terrestrial broadcasters are also making use of the system.
Parashoot is available for your University or college to use. Please take a look.
