Symposium: Remembering Painful Pasts
Wednesday, 20th January, 2010, 10-30-5 pm, Loughborough University.
Speakers:
Mike Pickering, Emily Keightley, Jo Aldridge and Chris Dearden (Loughborough University), Jovan Byford (Open University), Carrie Hamilton (Roehampton University) , Imogen Stidworthy, Shona Illingworth
The symposium has been organised by Emily Keightley and Mike Pickering of the Dept of Social Sciences at Loughborough University. Their ongoing research into memory and remembering was the initial impetus for the University's arts programme commissioning new work by artists who shared a similar line of inquiry.
Five papers which explore memory, remembering and painful pasts from a variety of perspectives will be introduced. The first paper by Jo Aldridge and Chris Deardon (Loughborough University) will attend to the difficulties involved in remembering painful childhoods. The second paper by Jovan Byford (Open University) shifts in focus from individual to collective suffering, and deals specifically with the Holocaust and the articulation of survivor testimony. The question of articulation is picked up in the third paper by Carrie Hamilton (Roehampton University) which is concerned with painful pasts and their narrative expression in oral history.
These papers will be followed by two from the commissioned artists. Shona Illingworth will talk about her work which you can see in the University Library and at Loughbrough train station. Illingworth creates evocative video and sound installations which explore the experience of memory and the formation of identity in situations of social tension and trauma. She will be joined by Steven Griffiths of Combat Stress, a charity working for ex-military suffering from PTSD, and to a small extent their families, whom she has worked closely with in the making of the work.
The symposium will take place in the Economics and Business Studies building. There will be an opportunity to visit some of the related commissions by artists Imogen Stidworthy, Shona Illingworth and Michael Pinchbeck followed by a drinks reception from 5.00pm. For those that want to stay longer there will also be a showing of Terence Davies's film Distant Voices, Still Lives at 6.30pm in the University cinema.
