Visitor Services Assistants - Search Engine at the NRM
£7.00 per hour
Minimum of 21 hours per week plus the opportunity to work additional hours.
2 x Permanent contract
1 x fixed term contract for 23 months
Exiting opportunities have arisen at the National Railway Museum for Visitor Services Assistants in the NRM's £4m open-access library & archive - Search Engine. We are looking for friendly, approachable and outgoing new members of our existing front-of-house team.
Working under the supervision of our Librarian and curatorial staff, you will carry out a wide variety of customer service tasks, including welcoming library and archive users, showing them how to use Search Engine to find out the answers to their questions, supervising the research rooms, and staffing the reception and reader registration desk. Your customer care skills will be crucial in maintaining the already highly positive reputation that Search Engine has gained in its first 2 years of operation, and thus helping to encourage repeat visits.
Ideally you will have work experience involving regular face-to-face contact with the public, but more important are excellent listening and verbal communications skills, the ability to work calmly and courteously under pressure, and the ability to learn and follow formal structured procedures. You do not have to know anything about railway history, but an interest in the work of the NRM, and of museums, libraries and archives generally, would be an advantage.
We welcome applications from a broad experience base, including from those seeking experience to support later applications to professional archives, library, museum or heritage qualifications.
The NRM opens seven days a week, 362 days a year, and so this post will involve regular weekend and bank holiday working on a rota basis.
In return we can offer membership of our pension, health and dental care schemes along with 22 days holiday pro rata.
Interested? Please email a copy of your CV and covering letter to [log in to unmask] to apply.
Closing date for applications is 10 February 2010. Assessment days will be held on 18th and 19th February 2010.
NMSI is an equal opportunities employer.
If you have a disability you may apply under our guaranteed interview scheme. Please contact us for details.
Unfortunately we are unable to contact unsuccessful candidates.
