Prioritization for preservation, conservation and digitization: a meeting to learn
what others are doing and share experiences
23 February 2010
British Library Centre for Conservation, London NW1 2DB
“There’s so much [to preserve / conserve / digitize] … people need skills in
how you select the right materials … how you make the decisions and what
you have to bear in mind” Focus group research into preservation training
needs, June 2009.
In all organisations, and especially in cash-straitened times, priorities have to
be established. Organisations have to choose what is most important to
protect and make available to use and choose which preservation actions will
most effectively achieve their aim of long-term access to collections. This
seminar looks at methodologies in use in different organisations, to prioritize
what should be preserved, conserved or digitized and looks at how to
establish which actions are most important.
The seminar, organised as part of the Preservation Advisory Centre/RLUK
learning programme, includes talks on the use of risk assessment
methodologies, the Preservation Assessment Survey, the British Library’s
preservation prioritization system; the digitization selection system at
Amsterdam City Archives; and examples of approaches to prioritization used
by some UK university libraries.
