As a system administrator I would take the non-MARC 21 data, usually in
CSV format or similar and including the URLs to the resource, and
auto-generate MARC records using MARCEdit with some standard fields and
holdings statements and some kind of group identifier so that the record
group can be updated or deleted in future. I would also process any
MARC records supplied in the same way to ensure that they are easily
identifiable in future. As far as I can see using MARCit presents the
same challenge for a system admin in terms of record load and update.
I prefer to have all resources represented in a single search and
presentation rather than separate lists - we look to Google as the
paradigm as it is the ultimate single search.

We are looking at our ejournal cataloguing policy. We currently
manually
catalogue both individual ejournal subscriptions and ejournals which
come as a
part of large packages, but are finding this difficult to sustain. It
would be
useful to hear of other libraries’ experiences. I am happy to
summarise for the
list.
1. Does your institution manually catalogue both its individual
ejournal
subscriptions and ejournals which come as a part of large packages?
2. Do you use MARCit or a similar product?
3. Have there been any downsides from using MARCit, for example, in
terms of
reduced searchability of your catalogue?
4. If you answered yes to either of questions 1 or 2, what is your
rationale for
continuing to include ejournals in your library catalogue, rather than
rely on
the A-Z list of a product such as SFX?
5. Has anyone decided to abandon the cataloguing of ejournals (with
perhaps
the exception of individual subscriptions) in favour of the A-Z list in
SFX (or
similar product)?
Many thanks,
Sharon
