OTHER WORLDS. THE EXOTIC IN THE MODERN ITALIAN LITERATURE
Since the Eighteenth Century – the first era of European colonialism −
literature, music, painting, architecture tried to reshape, through
imagination, the remotest worlds, mainly the Far East, but also the Americas
and Africa, using both trustworthy testimonies and fanciful ones. From the
ballet of Les Indes galantes by Philip Rameau to the imitations of newly
discovered chinaware, from translations of The Arabian Nights to the Western-
Eastern Divan by Goethe, the Enlightenment paved the way for the great exotic
mirage of romantic poetry (Byron, Chateaubriand, Baudelaire, Heine). The
French, English and German literary manifestations of this trend have been
thoroughly investigated (following on also from the seminal book by Edward W.
Said, Orientalism, 1978); a critical survey on Italy’s Exotic seems today
overdue. From the oriental fables of Carlo Gozzi to Puccini’s Turandot, from
journalistic accounts of life in Italian colonies to D’Annunzio’s poetry and
novels, to Gozzano’s and De Amicis’ writings, not forgetting the contemporary
works of Pasolini or Tabucchi, there is a rich tradition to be explored.
The journal «Italian Studies in Southern Africa» invites contributions to a
special issue (to be published in 2011) dedicated to different aspects of the
presence of the Exotic in Italian literature in the modern age. The journal,
founded in 1987 by A.P.I. (Association of Professionals Italianists), is
published bi-annually: it features articles on Italian language, literature
and, more broadly, culture in a multi- and inter-disciplinary spirit. Each
proposed article will be critically evaluated by two referees. Please send
papers – in Italian or in English – by the 30 October 2010 to [log in to unmask]
ac.za. Outlines of the proposal (300-350 words) are requested by no later than
the 30 April.
INVITO A COLLABORARE
ALTRI MONDI.
(Associazione Professori d’Italiano), esce due volte all’anno: è aperta a
I contributi – in italiano o in inglese −
Da inviare all’indirizzo: franco.
