Dear members of this list,
I'm Christophe Reffay and I also admit to being a lurker on this list.
As a computer scientist involved in CSCL (Computer Supported
Collaborative Learning) research since 2001, I researched Social
Network Analysis to define cohesion as an indicator of collaboration.
Since 2006 I have led the team involved in the French Mulce project
in defining and sharing Learning and Teaching Corpora. In the Mulce
project, we built the format and tools to share and visualize
corpora. We also made links and format transformations to allow for
the integration of other tools from the French Calico and Tatiana
projects, and built a new repository in the Open Language Archive
Community, that conforms to Open Archive Initiative protocol
(OAI-PMH). The resulting collection contains more than 25 sharable
collaborative learning corpora resulting from experiments using
either synchronous or asynchronous collaboration platforms.
My research interests center on expanding the effectiveness of our
work in on-line learning environments, by maximizing the benefits to
be obtained from the availability of electronic traces. Collaboration
analysis tools offer a promising perspective on this way to impact
real on-line learning. But the fragmentation of the
multi-disciplinary research community makes it hard to share
theoretical concepts and reuse tools. However, learning is a complex
activity, and research needs different approaches, theoretical
frameworks, analysis methods and tools. Today we have an opportunity
to share data sets and tools. Shared data sets and tools should be
given more visibility and should be made available for wider reuse
among the various disciplines in the TEL community.
Among these goals, evaluation of effectiveness and/or appropriateness
of on-line learning may be useful: that's the reason why I lurk this
list, but my interest is more centered on the instruments that could
help tutors to monitor the collaboration.
Christophe.
