** With apologies for cross-postings **

Members of the list may be interested in, or have students who might be

University of London. The joint studentship with colleagues in the
School of Business and Management is particularly relevant to members of
the list and I would be happy to discuss with interested applicants.

With best wishes for the New Year
Adrian Smith

The Department of Geography at Queen Mary University of London is
internationally recognized as a centre of research excellence and was
ranked joint 1st (with the departments of Geography at the universities
of Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and Durham) amongst UK Geography
departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

Research students are integral to the Department’s research culture, and
contribute to our record of research excellence. Our Graduate School has
grown significantly over the past decade or so. Alongside students
taking one of our five Masters degrees, the Department is home to some
45 PhD students. In recognition of the excellent training and
supervision in the Graduate School, the Department has been awarded ESRC
and NERC quota awards, and has a very strong record of studentship
funding from both the AHRC and other bodies.

The Department’s Graduate school sits within Queen Mary’s own Humanities
and Social Sciences Graduate School which provides additional support
and training to our students. As members of the University of London,
our students also have access to the university’s specialised libraries
and links to the more than 100 academic geographers who work within it.
On successful completion of their studies, they are awarded a University
of London PhD or MA/MSc.

We are very pleased you are considering the Department for postgraduate
study. Whether joining one of our MA/MSc programmes, or working for a
PhD, you will work closely with academic staff at the forefront of the
discipline. As a member of the Graduate School you will join a
well-resourced, intellectually-stimulating and supportive Department
