Three ESRC 1 + 3 Quota Awards (PhD Studentships) in the Methodology
Institute, LSE
The Methodology Institute at the LSE invites applications from prospective
PhD students for three fully funded studentships commencing Autumn 2010. The
studentships are available as either '1+3' or ‘+3' awards.
Proposals are encouraged in areas of research that have a strong
methodological component. Such research might use leading-edge methodologies
to pursue substantive questions in the social sciences, or develop and
assess particular methodologies.
Applicants are encouraged to make contact with a potential supervisor.
Faculty in the Methodology Institute have expertise in a variety of areas.
Please see details on our website:

the European Social Survey on trust in the police and the legitimacy of
legal authorities (please see here:

and an ESRC-funded project starting in the Methodology Institute April 2010
on the development of statistical techniques to analyse cross-national
survey data.
Applicants for all of the awards will have an Upper Second or First Class
undergraduate degree in a social science, or related, subject. Those who
already have ESRC-recognised methods training at Masters level can apply for
a ‘+3' award. Those without appropriate methods training can apply for the
four-year ‘1+3' award. Applicants whose proposals have a strong quantitative
focus and wish to gain additional training in advanced quantitative methods
will be eligible to apply for an additional ESRC annual stipend of £3,000.
ESRC full studentships are open to UK residents. Maintenance grants for all
studentships are currently circa £15,000 per annum and do not attract income
tax or National Insurance. EU-resident applicants can apply for tuition fees
