I think "lazy" is perhaps being a little over sensitive. Not being
bothered to become CGeol does not in my mind equate with being lazy.
I can't be bothered to upgrade my IEMA membership from affiliate to
associate because it costs more money and I don't get anything
additional for my trouble, this has not stopped me becoming a SiLC
though, something a lazy person could not hope to accomplish. Many
Fellows are not bothered to become CGeol as it is not directly relevant
to their reason for being a Fellow or their future career path - that is
the point Rick is trying to make (I think).
Rick has of course used a classic jounalistic tool to engender interest in
his subject matter. Make a sweeping generalisation, chuck in a few
facts and then make some points about the actual subject matter, why
CGeol status is not taken up by the membership of the Society or seen
as a requirement for advancement within our profession. Until such
time as attaining CGeol is required to advance your career then many
people will not be bothered, its a pain to complete the forms and it
costs more money each year.
