Hi Steve,
I don't recognise the rhyme but in east Surrey in the 1960s, at my primary
school, the appropriate noise was a long-drawn-out sound like Uhmmmm or
Ahhhhm, usually followed by "I'm telling on you!" There was definitely a
slight jeering sound to the vowel, but no v at the end.
Best wishes,
Jane Wickenden

Subject: Omv and Amv
<<snip>>
I queried the 'Omv' in the first line, presuming it was a typo, but Cathy
replied:
"Omv" is my attempt to write down that sound kids make when they spot
someone else doing something wrong. It is a slightly drawn-out sound and
usually is followed by the threat of telling an adult about the offence. I
assumed it was fairly universal but may be local to the Midlands!
and a little later:
I have just done extensive research (with the bloke I share an office with)
and he grew up saying "Amv" for the same situation. He grew up in the 50's
and 60's in West London. How interesting - I have never thought of that as
regional!
Oooommmmvvv!
But I still don't recognise it - can anyone comment on use or spelling
please?
