Further to the previous discussion on the term 'spades' William Gallagher, the Communist MP, used it in a non-racist way in his autobiography 'The Rolling of the Thunder' (1948 impression). On his way back from the 2nd Congrees of the Communist Inetrnational in 1920: 'We made Newcastle all right, but had to lie there on the boat until all sounds of life above deck had died down. About there in the morning we passed up from the socks into Newcastle proper. We were sorry specimans, black as the ace of spades.' (p. 21)
