This meeting will address the issue of motivating and engaging students
studying quantitative methods as part of a degree in a non-mathematical
discipline. The methods used by the speakers have technological bases.
Mark Brown will discuss his experience of using the ESDS (Economic and
Social Data Service) online data services in teaching social science
students.
Karen Robins will discuss the use of electronic voting systems and
league tables as a way to motivate and engage students.
Neil Spencer will discuss a system for generating and marking
tests, where each student has his or her own data set, but all the
students are asked to do the same tasks.
The section's Annual General Meeting will take place at the start of
this meeting (expected to last about 10 minutes).
