The School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Sheffield, is offering
a number of fully funded Graduate Teaching Assistantships, to start in 2010.
Two of these posts are intended to start in September 2010. An additional post
may be available before that, with a preferred starting date of February 2010.
Each post will combine PhD study with teaching experience within the School
and Mathematics and Statistics, with an enhanced stipend of £15,000 per annum,
rising in line with standard EPSRC stipends. Each Graduate Teaching Assistant
will undertake between 6 and 12 hours per week teaching and related duties
during term-time, including tutorials, marking and, where appropriate,
lecturing. Each post will be for 3.5 years. Applicants must be eligible to pay
"home" (essentially UK or EU) fees, rather than "overseas" fees, at the
University of Sheffield; the GTA post will cover the full fees.
Research in the School of Mathematics and Statistics covers a wide range of
interests, and is mostly organised at departmental level. For an overview of
our research and our academic staff, see the research pages for the
departments of Probability and Statistics
(http://www.shef.ac.uk/pas/research/), Pure Mathematics
(http://maths.dept.shef.ac.uk/puremaths/group_list.php) and Applied
Mathematics (http://www.shef.ac.uk/appliedmaths/research/). Informal enquiries
may be made to the PhD admissions tutor for Probability and Statistics (Prof
Paul Blackwell, <[log in to unmask]>), Pure Mathematics (Prof John
Greenlees) <[log in to unmask]>) or Applied Mathematics (Prof Alan Zinober
<[log in to unmask]>).
Candidates should apply for admission using the University's standard
application procedure; see
http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply/ (and are also
encouraged to apply for alternative University funding - see
http://www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/scholarships). No separate
application form is required for the GTA posts, but potential applicants
should contact the appropriate admissions tutor (above) directly with a brief
expression of interest, mentioning the GTA specifically and including their
broad area of research interest. Applicants who may be interested in starting
BEFORE September 2010 should express their interest as soon as possible, and
no later than 20th January; those interested in starting in September should
contact us no later than 12th February. The School of Mathematics and
Statistics reserves the right to award these studentships at any point, once
suitable candidates are available.
