The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or virulent new strains of pathogens.
We are looking for a mathematical modeller to develop and apply mathematical models of infection transmission and control, concentrating specifically on the dynamics and spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (AMRB) in hospitals and the community. The post is part of a European programme aiming to significantly advance knowledge of AMRB. The post-holder will be expected to work collaboratively with modellers, statisticians, epidemiologists and microbiologists in the HPA and outside. The Centre for Infections is an excellent place to conduct public health research that can help shape policy both nationally and internationally and this post provides an ideal opportunity for a researcher at the post-doc level to establish themselves in this field.
The post-holder will be based in the Modelling and Economics Unit at the Centre for Infections in Colindale, which is a dynamic and stimulating group comprising infectious disease modellers and health economists. The Unit works on diverse projects relating to the burden of infectious disease and modelling the impact of interventions against infections. The post-holder must hold a degree in mathematics, statistics, or a science with a substantial quantitative component and have a higher degree in a relevant subject. He/she must have experience of scientific programming and the development of mathematical models. Experience in C/C++ programming is desirable, as is experience of the development of graphical interfaces.
The Centre for Infections at Colindale, NW London is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for expertise, reference and research, surveillance and epidemiology in relation to human health. The modern purpose built centre is well equipped and provides excellent Library, Occupational Health and Refectory facilities. There is also a Nursery and Gym on site.
