I cannot believe that members of this list have taken umbrage at the
suggestion that we should be concerned about the survival of
historical material in the light of the terrible situation in Haiti.
I doubt if any Archivist would want to suggest that objects have more
value than lives but that does not mean it is not right to be
concerned about the fate of documents which embody the immensely
important history of Haiti. It is part of the self-identity of
Haitians and they need our help to preserve their cultural as well as
their physical well-being for the future.
As for looking after our own back yard and leaving others in extreme
circumstances to fend for themselves, it is not long since we were
'celebrating' the abolition of slavery and as a nation this is as much
a part of our history as that of the Caribbean.
We need only look to the devastation in Iraq to pause before writing
off the need to help people preserve their history from obliteration
before it is too late to do so.
