The Birmingham School of Media, Birmingham Archives and Heritage with
Media Archive Central England (MACE), are seeking a freelance worker to
assist with a primary assessment of holdings in the Philip Donnellan
Archive. This project is funded by a grant from the Digital Film Archive Fund
(DFAF) via Screen West Midlands and runs from February - May 2010.
The successful applicant will be expected to commence work by March 2010
at the latest and work is expected to last for approximately 10 working
weeks.
Description of work:
The aim of this project is to assess and catalogue (where possible) the
scope, nature and significance of the deposits in the Philip Donnellan
Archive. These deposits comprise: celluloid film, audio tape and
photographs, as well as other production-based archives such as scripts
and shooting schedules, research notes et al.
Some of the deposits are extremely delicate and will need careful
handling or identifying for referral to trained conservation staff.
While the archive is not yet catalogued, an initial deposit list exists
to aid and guide the work.
The ultimate objective of this task is to produce an assessment of
holdings that will aid a further bid for the preservation and
digitisation of material, as well as the consolidation of the archive
from holdings held in private hands.
Primarily, the work will take place in the Birmingham Archives and
Heritage Department in Birmingham Central Library with office space also
available at the BCU City North campus (Perry Barr).
Training in cataloguing software will be provided for candidates
unfamiliar with it.
Opportunity:
This project will establish a working relationship with the various
partners and it is hoped that the successful candidate will contribute
to the planning for future funding bids.
Person specification:
Applicants should have a knowledge and understanding of issues in
documentary film and television historiography and archives,
particularly those pertaining to conservation and cataloguing.
A working knowledge of copyright/Intellectual Property would be an
advantage in order to identify any potential issues pertaining to film
and audio deposits derived from BBC recordings.
Applicants should be well-organised and able to plan and deliver to
their own work schedule with attention to detail.
Remuneration:
Payment will be by negotiation based upon the applicant's requested
daily rate and exclusive of expenses, excepting those incurred in the
course of necessary work-related travel.
The successful applicant will be paid from DFAF funds via BCU, as a
freelance supplier.
Payment will be made
i) for an initial evaluation (based upon one day's visit and
collaboration with the Archivists) ii) upon successful completion of the
agreed schedule of work and submission of a final report.
