The National Portrait Gallery
ARCHIVE CATALOGUER
Collection: Papers of Sir George Scharf
Location: Central London
Salary: £24,700 pro rata
Fixed Term: 6 months full time, or 12 months part time, depending on hours
worked
Closing date: 8 February 2010
The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of
portraiture of the people who have made or who are currently contributing to
British history and culture. With more than 1.8 million visitors each year, the
Gallery is one of the country’s most important and popular galleries. In 2009
the Gallery received a grant from the National Cataloguing Grants Programme
for Archives to catalogue the papers of Sir George Scharf (1820-1895). We
require an Archive Cataloguer to undertake this work.
Scharf was the first Secretary, Keeper and Director of the National Portrait
Gallery. He was appointed in 1857 and his papers cover the first 38 years of
the institution’s existence. They include business, personal and family records.
Amongst the most significant are some 230 notebooks and sketchbooks, in
which he made detailed notes and meticulous drawings of portraits and other
subjects.
You will be responsible for reviewing, sorting, arranging and cataloguing the
material according to ISAD(G) and in-house standards, and entering records
onto a CALM database. The sketchbooks, in particular, require detailed file
level descriptions, noting people, portraits and places.
With a post graduate diploma or MA in Archive Administration, the successful
candidate should have experience of archive cataloguing and be familiar with
ISAD(G) and DS CALM. They will be motivated and happy to work on their
own initiative, have strong communication skills and an eye for detail. In
particular, they should have excellent time management skills: because the
post is externally funded, strict deadlines apply. The Archive cataloguer will
work within a small team of archive professionals.
