Dear AllStat

This is an advert for a Research Statistician at Durham University, previously
posted in October 09

Salary:£36,532 - £43,622 per annum
Grade:Grade 8
Contract:Non fixed-term, Full-time
Hours:Nominally 35 hours per week

Deadline for applications: Feb 16th 2010

The Wolfson Research Institute is Durham University's interdisciplinary
collaboration for applied research in health, social care and wellbeing, spanning
the biological and medical sciences, environmental sciences, social and policy
studies, psychology, geography and the humanities. The Institute is University-
wide and has it main building on the Queen's Campus in Stockton-on-Tees,
with offices, laboratories and meeting rooms. We are seeking to appoint a
Research Statistician with statistical expertise as applied in biomedical, clinical
or social sciences, epidemiology, geography or psychology. Candidates with
experience in these fields outside academia are encouraged to apply.

The post-holder will strengthen the Institute's contribution to making
successful grant applications, and relationships with the North East Public
Health Observatory (http://www.nepho.org.uk/). A high priority is to increase
the University's success with winning grants for research on health, social care
and well-being by capitalising on our world-class expertise and building
successful collaborative partnerships capable of securing major and sustainable
funding.

The post -holder will possess at least an MSc-level qualification in an
appropriate area. Preference will be given to candidates with qualifications in
Applied Statistics. A key role of the post will involve working with academic
and research colleagues to provide statistical advice, as well as to initiate,
design, implement and collaborate in research projects. S/he will also
co/author peer reviewed publications and reports, provide specialist training
and advice, and be a Principal or Co-Investigator on grant applications. The
successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of descriptive and
inferential statistical techniques, tools such as SPSS and STATA, and
databases such as MS Access. Ideally s/he will have a good appreciation of
NHS and university infrastructure and processes and a record of publications in
a health or medical field. An ability to work with people from diverse academic
backgrounds in an interdisciplinary setting is essential.

This exciting position will appeal to a broad range of experienced individuals
looking to develop their own career in a supportive and enthusiastic
environment. Although this is a non fixed term appointment, the post holder
will be expected in time to build the costs of the post into research grants.
Towards this goal, the development of a personal research programme will be
encouraged and supported through well-established links to many
departments, including the Department for Mathematical Sciences, and NEPHO.
Mentoring and support will be provided by incumbent statisticians. The post-
holder will also play a prominent role in the Durham Clinical Trials Unit, based at
the Wolfson Research Institute. An enhanced CRB check will be a necessary
pre-requisite of taking up this position.

The University has 26 academic Departments and Schools, based in Durham
City or on the Queen’s Campus in Stockton-on-Tees. There are over a 1,000
academic and research staff, 370 academic-related staff and almost 1,000
support staff. Our research is very highly-rated by external reviews, with an
increasing emphasis on different subjects working together to solve research
problems. To this end, there are eight interdisciplinary research institutes that
foster and focus collaborations across Departmental and School boundaries,
one of which is the Wolfson Research Institute, with its main base in a
purpose-built office and laboratory complex on Queen’s Campus.

The Wolfson Building, a striking building situated next to the River Tees,
opened in November 2001, providing accommodation for 90 staff and 30
research students following a substantial investment from the Wolfson
Foundation and the European Regional Development Fund. As well as helping to
meet the University’s strategic goal of producing top quality cutting-edge
research, the Wolfson Research Institute has a key role in the University’s
engagement with its region by contributing to policy, professional practice and
community and civic life.
