It's not the shop layout with the problem, its the Health & Safety implications once a disabled person leaves their car.

The problem is not the layout of the service station, if you are a wheelchair user apart from obstructions from the pumps when trying to open your door, the health and safety implications are horrendous. It is not practical and unfortunately you need to wait for assistance, this is only forthcoming if the service station has sufficient staff and can see you on the forecourt, plus wanting to help in the first place. Research has been done on this and published in the magazine Disability Now and with the Spinal Injuries Association.

Management processes, a positive approach by they companies, including staff training are what make petrol service stations accessible.

The design should be accompanied by management using the service call facility, or alternatively Sainsburys have the usual wheelchair symbol by the pumps stating for the driver to toot their horn and wait for assistance, (additional recommendation wave your blue badge out of the window so they can see where you are). This means you have to use a pump in clear view of the cash counter, there has to be sufficient staff working and/or if they are really busy, you're ignored saying all this Sainsburys provide the best service out there.

Another barrier and why disabled people find it difficult to travel to meetings, as a wheelchair user ,service stations fall into my top 10 barriers.

Hi Sue - 5 or so years ago when I looked into this many of the big

companies all had design guides for everything from pumps to shop
