----------
Alexander Herzen stayed in Ventnor, Isle of Wight during summer of 1854
(sketches done by him during that period of Ventnor were recently found in a
museum in Holland...and two of these skethes include our property
ie.St.Augustine Villa (1843) Apparently his friend Turgenev was here in 1860
for 3 weeks and according to records he was inspired and wrote 'Fathers and
Sons' coincidentally Karl Marx who never met HERZEN also stayed in Ventnor
shortly before his death.
Can you possibly put me in touch with one of your historian/researchers as I
trying to clarify the following facts
1) Which address did HERZEN stay at in Ventnor in 1854? The original owner
of St.Augustine Villa which he made 2 sketches of was Reverend Richard
SHUTTE retired canon from St.Pauls Cathederal.... is there any connection?
2) Did Turgenev (who lived on the Esplanade, Ventnor ) come to stay in
Ventnor purely on recommendations from HERZEN (who Lenin described as the
father of Russian Socialism).
3) Does the HERZEN University St.Petersborg have copies of these sketches
made by HERZEN?
much appreciated,
Bob WILLIAMSON
