Dear Lizzie
When doing the notes for the Readers' Guide I found Philip Mason (The Glass,
the Shadow, and the Fire) and Jan Montefiore's recent study, particularly
useful.
The line by the Elephant (p. 32, line 17) seems to me important: "It is but
the shifting of a little dirt. Let the dirt dig in the dirt if it pleases
the dirt", suggesting that despite the evident and inevitable march of
technology ib the service of Empire. in the longer perspective this may be
of little significance. Meanwhile, though, active men must get on with their
work.
All good wishes, John R
