This event should interest participatory geographers and community
partners.
Amidst the glut of 'public engagement' events going on at present (very
variously and often dubiously defined), i can vouch that this one has an
underlying philosophy of engagement as a two-way dialogue and a social
justice orientation.

Dear friends and colleagues,
We are writing to you to invite you to take part in what we expect to be
two exciting and stimulating events in 2010.
On Friday 14 May 2010, we will be holding a one-day symposium in rural
Northumberland called Good practice in public engagement: Expertise by
experience, which will bring together people who have been at the
receiving end of public engagement - whether researchers or members of
local communities - with those who have organised and analysed such
events. It will allow them to share their perspectives with each other
and with those with an interest in better public engagement in
government, research organisations and other civil society groups. The
venue provides overnight accomodation for those travelling from further
afield. Further details will available soon.
In preparation for this more inclusive event, we will he holding a
preparatory workshop on Friday 12 February 2010. This will be
specifically for those involved in research who have tried, or are
planning to try, public engagement or co-inquiry. Working with a
long-time PEALS collaborators, Swingbridge Film & Video, we will be
involving participants in making a film about public engagement to be
shown at the 14 May event. We attach a poster in case you are able to
advertise the earlier event. The location will be in the North East, but
is not yet finalised.
There are a small number of bursaries available to cover travel and, in
certain circumstances, loss of earnings for those for who might
otherwise be unable to take part.
Places are limited at both events, so if you are interested in attending
either one, or both, please reply to us at [log in to unmask]

soon as possible.
Best wishes,
