Snap: Magpies
Our neighbours' bird-bath
small but outstanding
in their front garden
figures large in their lives
and in ours in full view
from both places
kept full of clean water
sparkling in the sun
under a tall gum tree.
Birds come, drink and bathe
splashing and squawking
lining-up above in the tree
rainbow lorikeets
galahs corellas
magpie families.
Just now a single magpie big
enough almost to fill the bath
displaced most of the water
spray rose high
wings and tail feathers
flashed black and white.
Could have been the magpie
on LiveVideo:'ruffey lake park -
magpie attacks plane' -
home video, one minute -
camera attached to model plane -
steep take-off, man and boy
beneath receding -
circling our lake -
then like a fighter-plane
whizzing in from behind
a grim magpie strikes -
in for the kill -
screen goes dark -
end of item. Presumably
the wreck fell where dad and son
found it, rescued the camera
transferred it to LiveVideo,
rare magpie victory.
