Subject: [ARCHIVES-WALES] National Conservation Service
Archives-Wales list members may be interested to learn that a new UK-wide conservation consortium, consulted upon during 2009, has now been launched as the National Conservation Service.
The National Conservation Service - NCS - is being operated as a not-for-profit company for archives, libraries and museums without conservation staff.
NCS is being managed and hosted by Conservation Ltd, which is also providing the service to businesses at full price on a commercial basis as a means of establishing financial viability for the discounted not-for-profit operation (business archives available to researchers are supported under the not-for-profit service). The new service has been welcomed by The (English) National Archive and endorsements from other public bodies are being sought.
NCS is a subscription service, offering core advisory support and/or conservation treatment on an annual contract basis, with levels of support ranging from £500 p.a. to £2,750 p.a. For the subscription, institutions will get a named, Accredited Conservator who will work with them to plan and support their conservation and preservation needs and where appropriate help seek additional funding to make improvements or carry out conservation programmes. Workshop sites are being provided in Lincolnshire, Wiltshire and London for projects that arise from the service and it is hoped that perhaps a worskhop in wales may be possible (those interested in offering will be warmly welcomed!)
Paste the following into your browser:
www.ncs.org.uk
and you will be directed to the NCS landing page within the Conservation Ltd site. Click on the National Conservation Service in the menu bar and choose Archives, Libraries & Museums (or click on the relevant box on the page) and from here you can explore the different services and rates that the NCS offers for institutions.
A number of conservation and collection management consultants have expressed a willingness to join the service as Associates and in the coming weeks and months their details will begin to appear on the site.
The site has a lot of information, so do please scroll to the bottom where your browser doesn't show the full page. There you will also see Sponsored Links. NCS has been generously sponsored by a number of businesses and more will be sought. Of note is the substantial sponsorship provided by Restore Ltd to fund the establishment of this site, to whom go my thanks.
If you would like to join the service as a subscribing library, archive or museum or similar collection, contact me at the details below.
I'd like to thank the many positive respondents to the consultation and I look forward to a successful new venture that colleagues will find useful.
