MRIcron is designed to view NIfTI format images. It comes with a program
named dcm2nii that allows you to convert DICOM images to NIfTI.
The problem with DICOM is that the format was so complicated that each
manufacturer implemented it differently, and each manufacturer tends to
reinterpret it with subsequent upgrades. As a result dcm2nii gets modified
pretty rapidly.
By the way, if you drop a DICOM image onto MRIcron (or onto its dock icon if
you use OSX), MRIcron will attempt to show the 2D slice. However, this only
works for well behaved images and you still need dcm2nii to sort 3D/4D images.
