As Richard says, Kirkby Stephen was probably a postal address. John Cain
was Pease's agent and lived at Hartley. Pease worked, Bells mine.
I don't know why the London Lead Co were so interested in this area at that
date, but they also took an interest in the collieries in Mallerstang at
one time. Maybe in an attempt to beat the coal monopoly of the railways.
I asked Glynn Robinson about these mines, he says that there were two
middle fells, both barytes/iron, one on Warcop ranges and the other at Barras.
He says Bayle hill will be Bells and as Richard says Bugle Hill is probably
at Outhgill.
