The Guardian of the Genome
The above description was applied to the p53 gene in 1992 in recognition of the pivotal role of the p53 protein in the cellular response to noxious stimuli such as those capable of causing damage to DNA.
It is now known that most human cancers are associated with either mutations of the p53 gene or abnormalities of the p53 signalling pathway. These abnormalities are frequently associated with resistance to therapy and a poor outcome.
In this talk I will summarise the role of p53 in health and in malignancy, methods for detecting p53 loss and mutation and novel approaches for treating cancers with p53 abnormalities.
