Hello Duncan
Following on from Angie Blaydon I would also suggest that you go to
Surrey History Centre in Woking. However, instead of taking photos of
maps, ask if you can buy the required images as jpg files. They have
digitised their Surrey Historical OS maps and have made them available
as five CDs. The cost for the set is about £60 and the quality is
excellent but you may not want several thousand images hence the
suggestion that you buy specific ones. If it helps the images you
require are 0283.jpg to 0286.jpg on CD1.
I'm involved with a local history group near Leatherhead and we have the
complete set. We use Picasa to view them and also to crop them creating
large scale images of specific pieces of each map. If you are not aware
of Picasa its a very powerful free down load from Google for handling
digital images. On a Google web page click "more" and then "even more".
For overlays I suggest that you print them on OHP foils.
Let me know if I can help further. I've been involved in local history
for some 15 years and have built databases of Victorian communities in
several Surrey localities including Kingston on Thames.
regards
Peter Tilley
