Hi,
Co-incidentally, I too have been searching recently for a book (or books) about this topic, but a look at the description of the Morrison book below suggests it gives more information about the architecture of the shops than I am looking for.
I'm after any book/s that include/s information about shops and shopping from the Victorian era onwards, especially through to the Edwardian era, but maybe beyond too. With volunteers, I am creating a database from local Kelly's Directories, which I can use for enquiries, and to inform an exhibition I am hoping to create next year. So, I want to find out more about the changing patterns in the retail trade in towns and cities during esp. 1837-1910, and to answer one particularly intriguing question: what makes someone plying one trade change to a completely different one, and how do they manage it so quickly?? Was it "needs must" during a recession, or was there more to it?
I have borrowed Michael Winstanley's Shopkeepers World, 1830-1914 and John Benson & Laura Ugolini's A Nation of Shopkeepers: Retailing in Britain 1550-2000 , and the Winstanley one is quite good for this, but perhaps more of a summary than I'm looking for.
Any advice gratefully received!!
Thanks,
Chris Atkins
