Ah hah! A colleague has just reminded me that, on my Mac, if I have IPv6 turned on to Automatic (which I do) then it latches on to the AAAA records and tries very hard to do the HTTP request over IPv6 (which doesn't work from here...). Turned it to "Off" and now it's speedy quick.
