A report from the New Economics Foundation (NEF) has said
that hospital cleaners contribute more to society than bankers and that
this should be reflected in their pay. New research methodology devised
by the NEF to calculate the social value of different jobs has concluded
that good hospital cleaners create over £10 in value for every £1 they
receive in pay by preventing the spread of infection and protecting the
wider health of the public. Meanwhile "elite city bankers" earning over
£500,000 a year destroy £7 of value for every £1 they create, using
estimates of the cost of the recession on the rest of society. Eilis
Lawlor, head of the 'valuing what matters' team at NEF said: "The point
we are making is [that] there should be a relationship between what we
are paid and the value our work generates for society."
