News

BBC highlights report on infant mortality

The BBC has recently given a high profile to a study by Dr Roger Parslow
and the PICAN (Paediatric Intensive Care) Network, which shows that
south Asian children admitted to Intensive Care Units have a worse
outcome risk, and that living in relatively less deprived areas has less
protective effect. Some of the news reports of this study were
misleading: you can read more and access the abstract here
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=330404&tabI
D=289&catID=11583> .

Development of ethnic liver cells to aid drug development

This recent news story also reported by the BBC highlights a study that
has produced different liver cells for ethnic groups; the story suggests
that this, "study paves the way for a liver cells library to help
work-out the reaction of drugs for different ethnicities". Further
information on the study can be accessed here
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=327976&tabI
D=289&catID=11842> .

Published in the same week as that news story was the ethnicity and
health collection's Annual Evidence Update on, "ethnicity and
prescribing" which can be viewed here
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=327984&tabI
D=289> . To view the other topics covered in this year's Annual Evidence
Update follow this link

Afiya Consultation - update

The Government is at present consulting through a 136-page Green Paper
(download pdf
<http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/documents/d
igitalasset/dh_102732.pdf> ) on its proposed reforms to social care. It
is not yet clear how these will affect people from black and minority
ethnic communities. The Afiya Trust has conducted a survey for people to
express their opinions on this document and the importance of culturally
appropriate services. All feedback will be presented to Phil Hope,
Minister of State for Social Care. Users of the ethnicity and health
collection were invited to make their contributions. The Afiya response
is now complete, and it can be downloaded from near the end of this
Afiya Trust webpage
<http://afiyatrust.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=338&
Itemid=1> .

Diabetes testing

An editorial <http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/extract/339/oct28_2/b4354>
in a recent issue of the BMJ by Bayanne Olabi and Raj Bhopal highlights
concerns that existing tests for Diabetes, notably the IGTT (Glucose
tolerance tests), may produce differing results in diverse ethnic
groups.

New Additions

The following resources have been added to the ethnicity and health
specialist collection during October and November.

Cancer:

Cancer incidence rates among south Asians in four geographic regions:
India, Singapore, UK and US
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/ETHNICITY/ViewResource.aspx?resID=326852&tabI
D=289>

This study hopes to identify future aetiological research possibilities
as well as future screening and prevention strategies by examining
cancer incidence rates among Indians residing in four geographical
regions around the world.

Factors affecting attitudes toward colorectal cancer screening in the
primary care population
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=330447&tabI
D=289>

Regular screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) could significantly reduce
morbidity and mortality for the condition; however uptake rates in the
UK for CRC screening are currently less than 60%. This study
investigates the factors that affect attitudes towards screening.

Latest trends in cancer incidence among UK south Asians in Leicester
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/ETHNICITY/ViewResource.aspx?resID=326839&tabI

for south Asians than the rest of the population; this study explores
recent cancer incidence trends to see if there has been any change.

Risk and presenting features of prostate cancer amongst
African-Caribbean, south Asian and European men in North-East London
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/ETHNICITY/ViewResource.aspx?resID=326843&tabI
D=289>

To determine whether there are ethnic differences in incidence and
presenting features of all patients with prostate cancer in North-East
London, is the main aim of this study.

The unclear role of ethnicity in health inequalities: the scenario of
oral cancer incidence and survival in the British south Asian population
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=326845&tabI

of age or body mass index
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/ETHNICITY/ViewResource.aspx?resID=327679&tabI
D=289>

While investigating clinical and pathological features of breast cancers
this study found that black women are three times more likely to develop
triple-negative tumours than women from other ethnic groups; regardless
of age and BMI.

We can: reducing inequalities in commissioning cancer services
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/ETHNICITY/ViewResource.aspx?resID=326467&tabI
D=288&catID=11550>

This guidance is intended for those in PCTs, SHAs, cancer networks and
voluntary sector organisations who are running or commissioning services
aimed at reducing cancer inequalities.

marker of atherosclerotic and cardiovascular risk in a British
multi-ethnic population
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=329638&tabI
D=289>

Ethnic differences in pro-inflammatory markers maybe related to ethnic
differences in atherosclerotic and cardiovascular (CVD) and coronary
(CHD) heart disease; this study investigates ethnic differences in
circulating plasma endotoxin levels.

Race and ethnicity in trials of antihypertensive therapy to prevent
cardiovascular outcomes: a systematic review

Epidemiology of critically ill children in England and Wales: incidence,
mortality, deprivation and ethnicity
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=330404&tabI
D=289&catID=11583>

The admission rate and mortality of children receiving paediatric
intensive care was investigated in relation to ethnicity and
socioeconomic status in England and Wales.

Ethnicity, race, and health in multicultural societies: foundations for
better epidemiology, public health and health care
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=330281&tabI
D=291>

Multi-ethnic societies, with people drawn from widely varying ancestry,
cultures, languages and beliefs, now account for the majority of the
industrialised world. This poses a great challenge for health services
that have to meet social, ethical, legal and policy obligations to
deliver effective healthcare to ethnic minority groups. This textbook
aims to lay a foundation for those wishing to acquire the knowledge to
meet these obligations.

Diabetes:

Prevalence and reasons for insulin refusal in Bangladeshi patients with
poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes in East London
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=329658&tabI
D=289>

The prevalence and reasons for refusal to commence insulin in
Bangladeshi patients with type 2 diabetes are investigated by this
study.

Eyes and Vision:

ReGAE 2: glaucoma awareness and the primary eye-care service: some
perceptions among African Caribbeans in Birmingham UK
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=329647&tabI

based populations; this paper reports on the findings of a larger study
that investigated perceptions of the condition from less informed
community settings.

The advent of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology could
revolutionise the way we study human liver biology, allowing for "off
the shelf" models of human liver disease.

Infectious Diseases:

Ethnic variations in sexual behaviour in Great Britain and risk of
sexually transmitted infections: a probability survey
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/ETHNICITY/ViewResource.aspx?resID=327394&tabI
D=289&catID=13697>

Many developed countries have reported ethnic variations in the rates of
diagnosed sexually transmitted infections (STI's); this study uses data
from the, "2000 British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and
Lifestyles" to investigate sexual behaviours and adverse sexual health
outcomes in five ethnic groups in Great Britain.

generations; however large gaps in health still exist between and within
member EU states. This communication document by the Commission of the
European Communities launches the debate to define potential EU-led
flanking measures to support actions by member states to address this
issue.

development of drugs, drug regulation and clinical practice.

The role of ethnicity in variability in response to drugs: focus on
clinical pharmacology studies
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/Ethnicity/ViewResource.aspx?resID=326187&tabI
D=289&catID=11845>

One factor that may account for the observed differences in both
pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs is ethnicity. This paper
argues that drug development should ensure that a clinical pharmacologic
evaluation includes a population that is representative of the target
therapeutic population.

Service Delivery:

Enhancing race-based prescribing precision with pharmacogenomics
<http://www.library.nhs.uk/ETHNICITY/ViewResource.aspx?resID=326193&tabI
