Till Geochemistry Post-Doctoral position, Earth Sciences Department, Simon
Fraser University.
The Quaternary Research Group (http://www.sfu.ca/~qgrc/index.html) at the
Department of Earth Sciences (http://www.sfu.ca/earth-sciences/index.html)
is presently accepting applications for a one year Post Doctoral position.
Funding for this position comes from Geoscience BC
(http://www.geosciencebc.com/s/Home.asp). The research is field based and is
focused on till sampling of six 1:50,000 map areas (NTS 93J 5, 6, 11, 12,
13, and 14) northwest of the city of Prince George in central British
Columbia; a region of high mineral potential such as Cu-Au and Cu-Mo
porphyry deposits and where airborne electromagnetic (EM) survey and an
airborne gravity surveys have recently been completed
(http://www.geosciencebc.com/new/Quest.asp). Over 700 till samples have
already been collected in conjunction with terrain mapping and further
sampling will occur in the summer of 2010. This project will address
research questions relating to trace element till geochemical and
mineralogical signatures for specific bedrock lithologies and mineral
deposits. Till composition characterization will be established by till
matrix geochemistry (ICP-MS and INAA) and indicator mineral methods. The
successful candidate will be responsible for continuing work on two detailed
till geochemical surveys down ice from geophysical anomalies, with the aim
of identifying potential mineral deposit dispersal trains. The candidate
will examine trace element partitioning in the different till size fractions
and indicator mineral signatures in the heavy mineral fraction. The
candidate will have the option to pursue other research questions that
develop in the course of the project. Positions will be filled in January
2010.
Full funding is available for this position (1 year at $40,000/year).
Qualifications: The applicant will have recently completed a PhD in Earth
Science or related field with experience in geochemical methods and
applications. Previous Earth Science related field experience is a
requisite. Applicant must have GIS skills to allow plotting and integration
of results. Previous experience in terrain or surficial geology mapping is
an asset but not required.
